Founding of Celtic F.C.

1887

Celtic Football Club was founded in Glasgow's East End by Brother Walfrid, a Marist teacher of Irish birth, as a way to raise money for the poor of the area, many of them Irish Catholic immigrants. The club played its first match in 1888, a win over Rangers, the start of the rivalry known as the Old Firm. Celtic has won the Scottish league title many times and became the first British club to lift the European Cup in 1967, when the team known as the Lisbon Lions beat Inter Milan under manager Jock Stein. Its home ground is Celtic Park, nicknamed Paradise, and its supporters are known for their loyalty and strong Irish connections.
