Chester A. Arthur died on 18 November 1886 in New York City, aged 57. The 21st President of the United States, Arthur was a New York lawyer and Republican machine politician who served as collector of the Port of New York. He was chosen as James Garfield's running mate in 1880 to appease party bosses, and he became president when Garfield died of an assassin's wound in September 1881. Contrary to expectations, he supported civil service reform and signed the Pendleton Act of 1883. His administration also approved the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and began rebuilding the Navy with modern steel ships. Suffering from a serious kidney illness, he did not win his party's nomination in 1884 and died two years after leaving office.
