Founding of Atlético Madrid

1903

Atletico Madrid is a Spanish football club from the capital, founded by Basque students as a branch of Athletic Bilbao. It became independent in the first decade of its existence and later merged with an air force club after the Civil War, before taking its present name in the 1940s. Its red and white striped shirts come from the example of Athletic, and it is nicknamed Los Colchoneros, the mattress makers. Atletico has won La Liga many times, along with the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Europa League, and it reached the Champions League final three times, including twice against Real Madrid. Since 2017 it has played in the Metropolitano stadium, and Diego Simeone has been its coach since 2011.
