Guglielmo Marconi was born on 25 April 1874 in Bologna. An Italian inventor born in Bologna, Marconi developed one of the first practical systems of wireless telegraphy. After experiments in Italy, he moved to Britain in 1896, where he patented his apparatus and set up a company that sold radio equipment, especially for ships. In 1901 he reported receiving a transatlantic signal in Newfoundland, sent from Cornwall, a milestone for long-distance radio communication. Marconi shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909 with Karl Ferdinand Braun, and wireless sets helped save lives in sea disasters such as the sinking of the Titanic. In later years he became a supporter of Italian Fascism.
