Founding of ALBA

April 2005

ALBA, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America, is an intergovernmental organization of left-leaning Latin American and Caribbean states, proposed by Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez and by Cuba's Fidel Castro as an alternative to the US-backed Free Trade Area of the Americas. It promotes cooperation based on solidarity rather than competition, with arrangements such as the exchange of Venezuelan oil for Cuban doctors and teachers. Its members have included Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, Nicaragua and several Caribbean island states, while Ecuador left in 2018. Its influence declined with Venezuela's economic crisis and with changes of government in several of the member states.
