Creation of Kubuntu

8 April 2005

Kubuntu is an official flavor of the Ubuntu Linux distribution that uses the KDE desktop environment instead of Ubuntu's default GNOME-based interface. It was released together with the first Ubuntu versions in the spring of 2005, as part of the plan to offer variants tailored to different tastes. For its first years it was sponsored by Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, and later it came under community leadership with support from other companies. It shares software repositories and release schedules with Ubuntu, so users benefit from the same updates. The name combines the Ubuntu name with the K of KDE.
