Release of Super Mario Bros.

13 September 1985

Super Mario Bros. is a side-scrolling platform game developed and published by Nintendo for the Family Computer in Japan, designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka with music by Koji Kondo. Players control the plumber Mario, or his brother Luigi in a two-player mode, through eight worlds to rescue Princess Toadstool, later known as Peach, from the villain Bowser. Its release is widely credited with reviving the North American home video game market, which had collapsed in 1983, once the game came out with the Nintendo Entertainment System. It sold tens of millions of copies, was long the best-selling video game of all time, and established conventions of the platform genre. Mario became Nintendo's flagship character, with a long line of sequels and spin-offs.
