European migrant crisis

2014

The European migrant crisis was a period of record arrivals of migrants and refugees in the European Union, which peaked in 2015. Hundreds of thousands of people, many of them fleeing the Syrian civil war and conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and Eritrea, crossed the Mediterranean in small boats and then travelled through Greece and the Balkans towards northern Europe. More than a million people arrived by sea in 2015, and thousands drowned on the way. The influx divided European governments over how to share responsibility, with Germany taking in large numbers while countries such as Hungary built border fences. The EU reached an agreement with Turkey in 2016 to reduce arrivals, and the crisis influenced politics across the continent.
