Establishment of Torres del Paine National Park

13 May 1959

Torres del Paine National Park is one of the best-known protected areas in Chile, in the southern Patagonia region, named after the granite towers that rise sharply above the surrounding steppe, forests and lakes. Its landscape includes glaciers, such as Grey Glacier on the edge of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, turquoise lakes, rivers and waterfalls, all shaped by ice and the strong winds of the south. Wildlife includes guanacos, pumas, Andean condors and foxes. Hiking routes such as the W and the O Circuit attract visitors from all over the world. Large fires have burned parts of the park, and the park was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978.
