Stephen Harper was born on 30 April 1959 in Leaside. A Canadian politician, Harper led the Conservative Party of Canada and served as the country's 22nd prime minister from 2006 to 2015. Born in Toronto and educated as an economist in Alberta, he helped found the Reform Party and later merged its successor with the Progressive Conservatives. He led minority governments at first and won a majority in 2011. His government cut taxes, introduced the Federal Accountability Act, and supported resource development, while taking a tough stance on crime and a more assertive foreign policy. He lost the 2015 election to Justin Trudeau and left politics.
