Construction of Uniqlo

March 1949

Uniqlo is a Japanese clothing brand known for simple, functional casual wear sold at moderate prices. The business that became Uniqlo began as a small men's clothing firm in Ube, in Yamaguchi prefecture, in western Japan, and it was transformed after Tadashi Yanai took over from his father. The first store under the Unique Clothing Warehouse name opened in Hiroshima in the 1980s, and the name was later shortened to Uniqlo. The company grew into the parent firm Fast Retailing, and it expanded across Asia, Europe and North America with products such as fleece jackets and thermal underwear. It is now one of the largest clothing retailers in the world.
