Nicolás Maduro was born on 23 November 1962 in Caracas. A Venezuelan politician, Maduro worked as a bus driver and trade union activist before entering politics in the movement of Hugo Chávez. He served in the National Assembly, as foreign minister and as vice president, and he became president in 2013 after Chávez's death, winning a narrow election that year. His government has been marked by a severe economic crisis, hyperinflation, shortages and the emigration of millions of Venezuelans. Elections in 2018 and 2024 were widely disputed, and many governments and the opposition rejected the results. He was subject to US and European sanctions.
