Construction of London Luton Airport

16 July 1938

London Luton Airport is an international airport serving London from the town of Luton in Bedfordshire, north of the capital. It was opened by the local council in the late 1930s, and it played a military role during the Second World War. After the war it grew with charter holiday flights and later became a major base for low-cost carriers such as easyJet and Wizz Air. The airport remains publicly owned by the local authority, which operates it through a company. It has been expanded several times, and plans for further growth have been debated because of questions about noise, road access and emissions.
