Establishment of Kaziranga National Park

1905

Kaziranga National Park lies on the floodplain of the Brahmaputra River in the Indian state of Assam. Its protection began after Mary Curzon, wife of the viceroy Lord Curzon, visited and was struck by the scarcity of the one-horned rhinoceros, prompting a proposal to protect the area. It was declared a reserve forest and later a game sanctuary, and became a national park in 1974. Kaziranga holds about two thirds of the world's population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros, and also has tigers, elephants and wild water buffalo. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and annual floods and poaching are persistent challenges.
