Establishment of Sequoia National Park

25 September 1890

Sequoia National Park, in the southern Sierra Nevada of California, was the second national park established in the United States after Yellowstone. It protects groves of giant sequoias, including the General Sherman Tree, which is the largest tree on Earth by volume. Mount Whitney, the highest summit in the contiguous United States, rises near its eastern boundary. The park is administered jointly with the adjoining Kings Canyon National Park. Its attractions include Moro Rock and Crystal Cave. The giant sequoias have been threatened by drought and severe wildfires, and fires in 2020 and 2021 killed a significant number of mature trees, prompting efforts to protect the groves.
