Establishment of Yoho National Park

10 October 1886

Yoho National Park lies in the Canadian Rockies of eastern British Columbia, next to Banff and Kootenay national parks. It began as a reserve around Mount Stephen in 1886, after the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway across the Kicking Horse Pass, and the name Yoho comes from a Cree expression of awe. The park includes Takakkaw Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in Canada, the glacial Emerald Lake, and the Burgess Shale, a fossil bed of the Cambrian period that holds exceptionally well-preserved soft-bodied animals from more than 500 million years ago. The railway's Spiral Tunnels are also in the park. It is part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site.
