Construction of Times Square

1905

Times Square is a busy commercial intersection in Midtown Manhattan, where Broadway meets Seventh Avenue. It was formerly known as Longacre Square, and took its name from The New York Times, which built a new tower there in the early 1900s. The newspaper's New Year's Eve fireworks display and later the ball drop started the tradition of the celebration held each year. By the 1920s the area had become the centre of the American theatre district, and in the late twentieth century it was cleaned up and filled with illuminated advertising and tourist attractions. It is one of the most visited places in the world.
