The British Antarctic Expedition of 1907 to 1909, also known as the Nimrod Expedition, was led by Ernest Shackleton, who had been on Robert Falcon Scott's earlier expedition. His aim was to reach the South Pole, and he established a base at Cape Royds on Ross Island. In January 1909 his party, using ponies and sledges, reached a point only about 180 kilometres from the Pole, the farthest south anyone had gone, and turned back as supplies ran low. Other members of the expedition made the first ascent of Mount Erebus, and reached the area of the South Magnetic Pole. The expedition made Shackleton a national hero, and he was knighted.
