Establishment of Huascarán National Park

1 July 1975

Huascaran National Park protects a large section of the Cordillera Blanca, the highest tropical mountain range in the world, in the Andes of Peru. It is named after Huascaran, which at 6,768 metres is the highest mountain in the country. The park has dozens of snow-capped peaks, glacial lakes, valleys and alpine meadows, with rare plants such as the giant Puya raimondii, and animals such as the Andean condor, vicunas and the spectacled bear. In 1970, a great earthquake triggered an avalanche from Huascaran that buried the town of Yungay. Glaciers in the range are retreating because of climate change, which threatens the water supply of local communities. The park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
