Haile Selassie I died on 27 August 1975 in Addis Ababa, aged 83. The last emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie was born Tafari Makonnen and ruled first as regent and then as emperor from 1930. He modernized the country, introducing a written constitution in 1931 and promoting education, and he appealed to the League of Nations in 1936 after the Italian invasion, delivering a famous speech in Geneva. After years in exile he returned with British help in 1941. He helped found the Organisation of African Unity in 1963 and was revered as a messiah by the Rastafari movement. Famine and discontent led to his deposition by the military in 1974.
