Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park is in the Spanish Pyrenees, in the region of Aragon, near the French border. It was created in the early twentieth century as one of the first national parks in Spain, initially protecting the Ordesa valley. The park is known for dramatic limestone scenery, with deep canyons, waterfalls and the huge cirque of Soaso, as well as the peak of Monte Perdido, which rises above three thousand metres. Wildlife includes the Pyrenean ibex, which became extinct in the early 2000s, chamois, griffon vultures and bearded vultures. Together with the Gavarnie region of France, it was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
