Discovery of S/2009 S 1

26 July 2009

S/2009 S 1 is a small moonlet orbiting in the outer part of Saturn's B ring, which was found in images taken by the Cassini spacecraft. It was identified by a shadow it cast on the ring when Saturn was close to its equinox, as the Sun then illuminated the rings at a very low angle. The moonlet is about 300 metres across, much smaller than the larger moons of Saturn, and it makes visible disturbances in the ring material around it. It was the first object found embedded in the main rings of Saturn that was visible in this way as an individual body.
