Discovery of Ditsö̀

11 August 2009

Ditso is the name of an extrasolar planet, a world that orbits a star other than the Sun. Its unusual name suggests that it is one of the planets that received proper names through public naming campaigns organised by the International Astronomical Union, in which countries propose and vote for names drawn from their own languages and cultures. Like most exoplanets, it was found indirectly, by measuring small changes in the light or motion of its star, rather than being seen directly. Its discovery adds to the thousands of confirmed planets beyond the solar system.
