Creation of Julia

23 August 2009

Julia is a programming language for scientific and numerical computing, designed to combine the ease of languages such as Python and MATLAB with the speed of C. Its creators, Jeff Bezanson, Stefan Karpinski, Viral Shah and Alan Edelman, began work on it at MIT in 2009 and announced it publicly in early 2012. It uses just-in-time compilation and a feature called multiple dispatch, in which a function's behaviour is chosen according to the types of all its arguments. The language is free and open source, and version 1.0 came out in 2018. It is used in fields such as climate modelling, finance, machine learning and engineering.
