Discovery of Eukelade

5 February 2003

Eukelade is a small irregular moon of Jupiter, a few kilometres across, belonging to the Carme group of retrograde moons. It orbits the planet at a great distance, in the opposite direction to Jupiter's rotation. Astronomers think these moons are fragments of a single larger body that was captured and later broken up. Eukelade was discovered in a survey of the planet's outer moons by astronomers at the University of Hawaii, and it takes a name from Greek mythology in the manner of the planet's other moons. The final e marks it as having a retrograde orbit.
