Discovery of Comet Holmes

6 November 1892

Comet Holmes, officially 17P/Holmes, was found by Edwin Holmes, an English amateur astronomer, who noticed an unexpected bright, fuzzy object in the constellation Andromeda. It was soon seen to be a comet with a short orbital period of around seven years. It was faint for most of its history, and then, in 2007, it underwent one of the largest outbursts ever recorded for a comet, increasing in brightness by hundreds of thousands of times in a short time and becoming visible to the naked eye. Its expanding cloud of dust for a time became larger in size than the Sun, although much of the material was extremely thin.
