6P/d'Arrest is a periodic comet found by the German astronomer Heinrich Louis d'Arrest at the Leipzig observatory. It belongs to the Jupiter family of comets, which have short orbital periods of a few years, and returns to the inner Solar System roughly every six and a half years. It has been seen at many of its returns, and for a time it was noted for outbursts in brightness. d'Arrest is also remembered for his role in the search for Neptune, since he was the student who helped Johann Galle find the planet at the Berlin Observatory in 1846.
