Launch of Vogue

17 December 1892

Vogue is an American fashion and lifestyle magazine, started in New York as a weekly aimed at the city's high society by Arthur Baldwin Turnure. It was bought by Conde Nast in the first decade of the twentieth century, who turned it into a leading glossy magazine and a tastemaker. Over the decades it published the work of famous photographers, such as Edward Steichen, Irving Penn and Annie Leibovitz, and writers and illustrators, and its covers became a symbol of fashion. Under the editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who took over in 1988, it became even more influential. There are now dozens of international editions, and it has been criticised in the past for the lack of diversity in its images.
