Democratic Republic of Afghanistan

from 30 April 1978 to 1 April 1992

The Democratic Republic of Afghanistan was a socialist state established after the Saur Revolution of April 1978, in which army officers loyal to the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan overthrew President Mohammed Daoud Khan. The party's reforms in land, education and women's rights met strong resistance in the countryside, and it was also split by internal rivalries. In December 1979 the Soviet Union sent troops, which began a war with mujahideen groups supported by Pakistan, the United States and others. Babrak Karmal, then Najibullah, led the government. After Soviet forces withdrew in 1989, Najibullah held on until 1992, when the regime collapsed and a civil war between rival factions followed.
