Construction of Narita International Airport

20 May 1978

Narita International Airport serves Tokyo from Chiba Prefecture, about sixty kilometers east of the city. It was planned in the 1960s to relieve Haneda airport, which could no longer handle growing international traffic. Its construction provoked years of protest by local farmers and activists in what is known as the Sanrizuka struggle, which delayed the opening and left some land unacquired. The first runway finally opened in 1978, and the airport has since been expanded and become one of Japan's main international gateways. Haneda later regained international flights, but Narita remains important for long-haul services and for cargo.
