Warren G. Harding died on 2 August 1923 in Palace Hotel, aged 57. The 29th President of the United States, Harding was a newspaper publisher from Ohio who became a Republican senator. He won the 1920 election in a landslide on a promise of a return to normalcy after the First World War and the upheavals of the Wilson years. His administration cut taxes, created the Bureau of the Budget and hosted the Washington Naval Conference on arms limitation. However, he appointed several friends and associates who later became involved in corruption, and the Teapot Dome scandal, over oil leases, came to light after his death. He died suddenly in San Francisco in August 1923, and Calvin Coolidge succeeded him.
