Henry Kissinger was born on 27 May 1923 in Fürth. A German-born American diplomat and scholar, Kissinger served as National Security Advisor and then Secretary of State under Presidents Nixon and Ford. He was a leading proponent of realpolitik and detente with the Soviet Union, helped open relations with China, and negotiated the Paris Peace Accords that ended direct American involvement in Vietnam, for which he shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973. His legacy remains sharply contested, with critics pointing to American policy in Cambodia, Chile and Bangladesh. He remained an influential commentator and consultant on foreign affairs for decades afterward.
