Shimon Peres was born on 2 August 1923 in Višnieva. An Israeli statesman, Peres was born in Poland and emigrated to Mandatory Palestine as a boy. A protege of David Ben-Gurion, he helped build Israel's defense industry and arranged key arms deals, and he is widely credited with starting the country's nuclear program. He served as prime minister, foreign minister and president of Israel, and was a leading architect of the Oslo Accords, for which he shared the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize with Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat. One of the country's longest-serving public figures, he was in the Knesset for nearly half a century.
