David Ben-Gurion was born on 16 October 1886 in Płońsk. An Israeli statesman, Ben-Gurion was born David Grün in Płońsk in what was then the Russian Empire, and emigrated to Ottoman-ruled Palestine in 1906. He became a leader of the Zionist labour movement, headed the Jewish Agency and, on 14 May 1948, proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel. He served as its first prime minister and defence minister, built the Israel Defense Forces, and oversaw the absorption of large numbers of immigrants. His government agreed to reparations from West Germany and joined Britain and France in the 1956 Suez campaign. He retired in 1963 to a kibbutz in the Negev desert, Sde Boker, where he died in 1973.
