Death of Albert Einstein

18 April 1955

Albert Einstein died on 18 April 1955 in Princeton, aged 76. A German-born theoretical physicist, Einstein revolutionised the understanding of space, time and gravity. In 1905, while working at the Swiss patent office, he published papers on the photoelectric effect, Brownian motion and special relativity, including the equivalence of mass and energy. His general theory of relativity of 1915 described gravity as the curvature of spacetime and was confirmed by observations of a solar eclipse in 1919. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921. As a Jew he left Germany after the Nazis took power and settled at Princeton in the United States, where he supported pacifist and civil-rights causes.
