Creation of F#

2005

F# is a functional-first programming language for the .NET platform, developed at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, mainly by Don Syme. It first appeared in 2005 and is based on ML and OCaml, which provide type inference, pattern matching and immutable data, and it also supports object-oriented and imperative styles. F# is used in finance, data analysis and scientific computing, as well as for web and cloud applications. Microsoft integrated it into Visual Studio in 2010, and since then it has been open source and available on other operating systems. It influenced features added to other languages, such as C#.
