Construction of Singapore Changi Airport

29 December 1981

Changi Airport is Singapore's main international airport, located at the eastern end of the island, partly on reclaimed land. It replaced the older Paya Lebar airport, which had become too busy and too close to residential areas to be expanded. The first terminal was opened in the early 1980s, with more terminals and a third runway added over the following decades, and it has since been widely praised for efficiency. It has become a major hub for flights between Europe, Asia and Australia. It is known for its gardens, waterfall and shopping complex, and has regularly been named the world's best airport in international surveys.
