Construction of Václav Havel Airport Prague

5 April 1937

Vaclav Havel Airport Prague, also known by the name of its location Ruzyne, is the main international airport of the Czech Republic. It opened in the late 1930s and has been enlarged repeatedly. During the Communist era it was the hub of the state airline Czechoslovak Airlines, and after 1989 it was modernized and traffic grew quickly, with the opening of a new terminal in 2006. The airport was renamed in 2012 in honour of the dissident playwright Vaclav Havel, who became the last president of Czechoslovakia and the first of the Czech Republic. It serves as a base for Czech Airlines and for low-cost operators, and it connects Prague with destinations across Europe and beyond.
