Abd al-Aziz Boutafliqa was born on 2 March 1937 in Oujda. An Algerian politician, Bouteflika served as President of Algeria from 1999 to 2019. A veteran of the war of independence against France, he was foreign minister under Houari Boumediene for years. After the civil war of the 1990s he came to power with the support of the army, and led a policy of national reconciliation. He amended the constitution to remove term limits and won three further elections. A stroke in 2013 left him largely out of public view, and when he announced that he would seek a fifth term, mass protests forced him to withdraw and resign in April 2019.
