Construction of Olympic Stadium in Athens

3 September 1982

The Olympic Stadium in Athens, officially the Spyros Louis Olympic Stadium, is the main stadium of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex in the suburb of Marousi. It was built for the 1982 European Athletics Championships and later hosted football matches, including the 1994 Cup Winners' Cup final and the 2007 Champions League final. For the 2004 Summer Olympics, the stadium was upgraded under a design by the architect Santiago Calatrava, who added a spectacular steel arch roof. It was the setting of the opening and closing ceremonies and athletics events at the Games. It is named after Spyros Louis, the Greek water carrier who won the marathon at the first modern Olympics in 1896.
