Music Day

21 June 1982

Music Day, known in France as the Fete de la Musique, is an annual celebration of music held on the summer solstice. It was launched by the French Ministry of Culture under Jack Lang, based on an idea by Maurice Fleuret, who wanted to encourage people to play music and to make music available to everyone. On that day, free concerts are held in streets, squares, parks and other public places, and amateur and professional musicians perform in styles ranging from classical to rock, jazz and folk. The event proved very popular and spread to more than a hundred countries, and in Europe it is celebrated under the name of the Make Music Day in many cities.
