Launch of USA Today

15 September 1982

USA Today is an American daily newspaper founded by Al Neuharth of the Gannett company, as the country's first general-interest national daily paper. It was printed at sites around the country using satellite transmission, so that a copy of the same edition could be sold in many cities. It was known for its colourful design, short articles, weather maps and graphics, and it was mocked by critics as McPaper before it gained credibility, winning respect for its coverage of news and sports. In time it became one of the most widely circulated newspapers in the United States, and later built a strong digital operation, including a website launched in the 1990s.
