Construction of Ngorongoro Conservation Area

1959

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected region in northern Tanzania, centered on the vast Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcanic caldera that holds a rich concentration of wildlife. It was established in 1959, when the Serengeti National Park was separated from it and the Maasai pastoralists were allowed to remain in the conservation area, rather than in the park. It is thus a multiple-use area, designed for the combined needs of wildlife, livestock and people. It also includes Olduvai Gorge, where Louis and Mary Leakey found important early human fossils, and nearby Laetoli, with ancient footprints. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage site in 1979. Disputes over the rights and resettlement of the Maasai continue.
