Construction of Tokyo Tower

23 December 1958

Tokyo Tower is a steel lattice communications and observation tower in the Minato district of Tokyo, completed in December 1958. It was designed by the architect Tachū Naitō and modeled loosely on the Eiffel Tower, but built taller at 333 meters and painted in white and international orange to meet aviation safety rules. The tower was built to broadcast television signals for the capital at a time when several stations needed a common high antenna, and it quickly became a symbol of Japan's postwar recovery. It was Japan's tallest tower until the Tokyo Skytree opened in 2012, and it still serves as an observation deck and a popular landmark.
