Construction of Boryspil International Airport

1959

Boryspil International Airport is the largest airport of Ukraine, located east of Kyiv, the capital. It began operating as a civil airfield around 1959 and later grew into the country's main gateway, with Soviet-era terminals that were extended after Ukraine became independent in 1991. A modern terminal opened in 2012, ahead of the football European Championship held jointly by Ukraine and Poland. It served as the base of Ukraine International Airlines and as a hub for connections to Europe, Asia and North America. Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukrainian airspace has been closed to civilian flights and the airport has stopped regular passenger service.
