The first IVF baby is born

25 July 1978

Louise Brown was born at Oldham General Hospital in Lancashire, England, on 25 July 1978, the first person conceived by in vitro fertilisation. The method was developed by the physiologist Robert Edwards and the gynaecologist Patrick Steptoe, who had worked for over a decade despite opposition from the Medical Research Council, churches and the press. Edwards received the Nobel Prize in 2010. Since then more than 12 million babies have been born through IVF, and the technique became a routine fertility treatment worldwide.
