Construction of Maracanã Stadium

16 June 1950

The Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro was built for the 1950 FIFA World Cup, which Brazil hosted, and was inaugurated on 16 June 1950. At the time it was the largest football stadium in the world, and the match that decided the tournament, between Brazil and Uruguay, was watched by a crowd of close to 200,000 people. Uruguay won 2-1, a result that stunned the country and is remembered in Brazil as the Maracanazo. The stadium was later renovated for the 2014 World Cup, where it hosted the final, and for the 2016 Summer Olympics. It is named after the Maracana River, which flows nearby, and it is closely associated with the Brazilian clubs Flamengo and Fluminense.
