Viktor Yanukovych was born on 9 July 1950 in Yenakiieve. A Ukrainian politician, Yanukovych served as prime minister and was president from 2010 to 2014. He had been declared winner of the disputed 2004 election, which led to the Orange Revolution and a rerun that he lost. After winning the presidency six years later, he reversed constitutional reforms and jailed his rival Yulia Tymoshenko. In late 2013 he halted an association agreement with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Russia, which led to the Euromaidan protests. After riots left scores dead in central Kyiv, he fled the country in February 2014 and was removed by parliament. He was later convicted of treason in absentia.
