Construction of London Gatwick Airport

1958

London Gatwick Airport is an international airport in West Sussex, south of London, and the second-busiest airport in the United Kingdom after Heathrow. It began as a small airfield in the 1930s and was developed after the war, and the airport was officially reopened in a modernised form by Queen Elizabeth II in the late 1950s, with a new terminal built over the railway line. It is known for having a railway station directly connected to its terminals, giving fast links to central London. Its single main runway handles more traffic than any other single-runway airport in the world. It serves as a base for many low-cost and charter carriers.
