Construction of Etihad Stadium

25 July 2002

The Etihad Stadium in eastern Manchester was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and opened in July 2002. After the Games, the stadium was converted into a football ground, with the lower tier lowered and a new tier of seating added, and Manchester City moved there from Maine Road in 2003. It was first called the City of Manchester Stadium, and in 2011 the club agreed a long-term naming rights deal with Etihad Airways. The stadium has hosted international matches, concerts and the 2008 UEFA Cup final, and has been expanded several times. It is surrounded by the Etihad Campus, which includes the club's training facilities and academy.
